About
SHAINA HATCHELL'S STORY
me 2_edited.jpg

Even as a young child Shaina Hatchell would conjure up stories with her imagination, sharing them with anyone who would listen. She has developed her storytelling and writing quite a bit since then, but the thrill of language and creation she first discovered as a child has never gone away.

Today, Shaina Hatchell is a Registered Nurse and Certified Diabetes Education and Care Specialist. Diabetes education has always been her passion after with her brother was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2002. While working towards a goal of becoming a nurse and diabetes expert, she used poetry to help alleviate stress. Shaina found joy in rhyming her poems and became known for spoken word by close family and friends.

In her years as a diabetes educator, she realized that there is a need for more diversified educational materials. Combining her two loves, poetry and diabetes education, she has created the Shia Learns book series. These books explain diabetes and management simply and rhythmically. The first of this 3 book series to publish was "Shia Learns About Insulin", where we follow Shia and her parents' experience at new onset. Since, she has published shia learns about diabetes care which introduces a latinx family. the final of the series is in production now! We hope that you enjoy reading these books as much as she enjoyed writing it!

She has, also, now founded the brown skin & insulin collective. This platform will be used to bring more diabetes education to bipoc communities through increased representation. Stay tuned for the upcoming projects and products this company will provide as we continue to advocate for the underserved and underheard.

What readers think

"I thoroughly enjoyed the simplicity of the words used in the book. it's not full of medical terms or words that my child or even I wouldn't understand. oh and it even rhymes!!"
